Whincup takes pole for race one
Jamie Whincup will start from pole position for the first of this weekend's V8 Supercar races at Barbagallo. The Triple 8 Holden driver led the way in this morning's 20-minute qualifying session with a 56.0734s lap, which put him 0.2 seconds clear of front row partner Will Davison's FPR Ford. Craig Lowndes will start third in the second Triple 8 car, ahead of Steven Johnson and Rick Kelly.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced that Kia is recalling 58,322 2004 through 2007 Spectra models due to fuel tank straps that may corrode over time. The recall, however, is only taking place in northern states that utilize salt on roads during the winter.
The NHTSA report says that one or both straps may separate, allowing the tank to make contact with the ground. If that happens, fuel can leak, metal on cement could produce sparks and a serious fire could result.
Owners of the affected vehicles will be contacted by the automaker and instructed to go to a Kia dealership for a free-of-charge repair. A technician will replace the straps and attaching hardware with zinc-coated parts.
The Korean automaker is also recalling 12,690 2011 Kia Sorento crossovers with 2WD and the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine for a transmission issue. NHTSA says the intermediate shaft may suffer from noise and excessive wear due to a misalignment of the shaft with the right side output gear. If the condition goes unchecked, it could lead to a whirring or whining noise, and eventually the transmission could be damaged. Owners of the affected vehicles will need to take their Sorento to a Kia dealer, where a technician will replace the right side output gear and intermediate shaft free of charge.
UPDATE: NHTSA just added the 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe to the same recall affecting the 2011 Kia Sorento. Approximately 6,169 units of the Santa Fe are affected. Click here for more details.

Peugeot EX1 sets fastest electric car lap at the 'Ring

The Peugeot EX1 has whirred its way into the record books by lapping the 12-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife with a 9:01.338-minute run. According to Peugeot, that shatters the previous electric vehicle record at the track by an impressive 50 seconds.
The fully-electric Pug, which debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, averaged 85 mph on its record-setting run. Peugeot has promised to release photos and video of the EX1 at the Nordschleife, but for now we'll have to wait.
The lightweight, four-wheel drive EX1 was created to celebrate Peugeot's 200th birthday, and packs a pair of electric motors (one on each axle) totaling 340 horsepower. As for production, don't hold your breath, though the technologies on display in the EX1 and lessons learned during its development will likely influence future models.

V8 Supercar drivers Karl Reindler and Steve Owen were fortunate to escape serious injuries in a huge startline accident in race two at Barbagallo. Mercedes-Benz and Toyota plants halted by tornado outage

Tornadoes are wreaking havoc in the southern United States, causing Mercedes-Benz and Toyota to put the brakes on production at each of their respective Alabama manufacturing facilities. Mercedes-Benz builds GL-Class, M-Class and R-Class vehicles in Tuscaloosa, while Toyota's Huntsville plant produces V6 and V8 engines for the Tundra and Tacoma pickup trucks and the Sequoia sport utility vehicle.
Both facilities are closed at the moment, and power outages are affecting many areas in the South. Reps for Toyota and Mercedes have stated that their plants will remain closed through the weekend.

Kubica set to leave hospital
Robert Kubica is set to leave hospital within the next 10 days to begin the next phase of the rehabilitation process that he hopes will get him back into Formula 1. The Pole has been at the Santa Corona hospital in Italy since the rally crash in February that left him with serious arm and leg injuries. Speaking to the official Renault F1 website on Thursday, Kubica said that he intends to return home to Monaco soon - before moving to the Formula Medicine clinic in Italy to continue his recovery

Lotus delighted with breakthrough race
Lotus technical chief Mike Gascoyne said the Malaysian Grand Prix marked the first time that the squad could really start racing its rivals, after an encouraging run to 15th for Heikki Kovalainen. Although the Finn did not manage to beat any of the established teams, he had sufficient pace to keep the likes of Toro Rosso, Force India and even Mercedes in sight at times. Hot Wheels to attempt World's Longest Jump at Indy 500 [w/video]

We all did it as kids - grabbing one end of an impossibly long stretch of plastic track, heaving it up and attaching one end to the highest object we could find (usually a door) and creating a ramp at the other end with a carefully planned trajectory to score the longest possible airborne distance, then finally setting our favorite Hot Wheels car on a journey of no return.
Team Hot Wheels, a newly created group of stuntmen and extreme sports addicts, are setting out to recreate those childhood memories in the real world. To get there, the group is assembling a 100-foot-tall starting ramp in the shape of a door that leads to - you guessed it - a giant jump. The resulting flight has a goal of reaching 302 feet, which would be a new world record distance.
We don't know who's piloting the machine just yet (we suspect we'll find out for sure if it's an official record). In any case, it's the actual off-road truck, which features rear fins reminiscent of a '59 Cadillac, and the giant Hot Wheels V-Drop replica track that are the real stars here.
Are you asking yourself why Hot Wheels is going to all this trouble to promote kids toys? Well, therein lies the issue. These don't have to be just toys for kids - Hot Wheels is hoping to attract the attention of adults (males mostly, as you'd imagine) that grew up with these little cars and have fond memories of them. Collectors, take note.
