Power/Franchitti tension simmers on
Tension between IndyCar Series championship rivals Dario Franchitti and Will Power continued to simmer in Mid-Ohio after the pair made contact again on the opening lap of the race. Relations between the two had already turned sour in July after Power suggested that Franchitti should have received a penalty for tipping him in to a spin at Toronto - the Scot going on to win the race. Franchitti then accused Power of trying to do the same thing on the first lap of the race at Mid-Ohio on Sunday as the pair fought over third position.
Layden Tops South Boston
The iRacing.com Street Stock Series traveled to South Boston, Virginia to the famed 0.4 mile “SoBo” oval to start Season Three of 2011. This week brought new faces to the top of the series points standings as sim racers look to dethrone back-to-back champion Nick Ottinger (Carolina). Weekly High Strength of Field Josh Wronkowski (Florida) got off to a strong start this season with a win in this week’s high Strength of Field (SoF) race which paid 165 points. Wronkowski dominated the race from the pole position, leading all 40 laps in route to a 2.8 second win over Brandon Atkinson (Carolina). Michael Vaughn (West) and Brandon M Thrasher (Mid-South) rounded out the top five. Wronkoski was perfect in Week 1, winning all three races he entered. When asked about [...]

Welch: Proton can be front-runner
British Touring Car team boss John Welch believes the new Proton Gen-2 can be a future frontrunner in the series after its first track appearances at Snetterton on Saturday. Daniel Welch drove the front-wheel-drive Swindon-engined NGTC car in both free practice sessions on the Snetterton 300 circuit. With no track running beforehand, the car suffered some minor teething problems, such as high water temperatures and power steering issues, but completed 16 laps.

Lewis Hamilton reckons he was still able to get some useful information about McLaren's latest upgrades - including a new rear wing - despite the rain in Silverstone practice. Though most drivers were frustrated with the total lack of dry running on day one of the weekend of the exhaust rules clampdown, Hamilton felt he had managed to learn at least a little about the new parts. Martin Tomczyk continued his domination of the Spielberg DTM weekend by setting the fastest time in warm-up on Sunday morning. The Phoenix Audi driver, who will start the race from pole position, set the pace in 1m26.285s with a lap seven minutes from the end of the session, enough to put him ahead of Maro Engel's Mucke Mercedes by a scant 0.007s. Chevy Volt earns five-star NHTSA crash rating [w/videos]

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt has earned "good" marks in crash tests before, and new tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's New Car Assessment Program prove that the earlier results were not a fluke. The Volt scored a five-star overall safety rating, which is the highest-possible score in NHTSA's new and more strict safety tests for 2011 model year vehicles.
General Motors says that a comprehensive system of safety features - specifically the StabiliTrak electronic stability control system and a bunch of air bags - helped the Volt become the first electric vehicle to get five stars.
The "first" part might be simply because NHTSA has not yet tested a Nissan Leaf. The agency will soon smash and bash the electric machine from Japan, and we expect the all-electric hatch will match GM's plug-in hybrid for safety - as it has before. Until then, we can view with fascination the Chevy Volt crash videos after the jump.

Jamie Whincup will start from pole position for the first of this weekend's V8 Supercar races at Barbagallo. The Triple 8 Holden driver led the way in this morning's 20-minute qualifying session with a 56.0734s lap, which put him 0.2 seconds clear of front row partner Will Davison's FPR Ford. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced that Kia is recalling 58,322 2004 through 2007 Spectra models due to fuel tank straps that may corrode over time. The recall, however, is only taking place in northern states that utilize salt on roads during the winter.
The NHTSA report says that one or both straps may separate, allowing the tank to make contact with the ground. If that happens, fuel can leak, metal on cement could produce sparks and a serious fire could result.
Owners of the affected vehicles will be contacted by the automaker and instructed to go to a Kia dealership for a free-of-charge repair. A technician will replace the straps and attaching hardware with zinc-coated parts.
The Korean automaker is also recalling 12,690 2011 Kia Sorento crossovers with 2WD and the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine for a transmission issue. NHTSA says the intermediate shaft may suffer from noise and excessive wear due to a misalignment of the shaft with the right side output gear. If the condition goes unchecked, it could lead to a whirring or whining noise, and eventually the transmission could be damaged. Owners of the affected vehicles will need to take their Sorento to a Kia dealer, where a technician will replace the right side output gear and intermediate shaft free of charge.
UPDATE: NHTSA just added the 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe to the same recall affecting the 2011 Kia Sorento. Approximately 6,169 units of the Santa Fe are affected. Click here for more details.

Peugeot EX1 sets fastest electric car lap at the 'Ring

The Peugeot EX1 has whirred its way into the record books by lapping the 12-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife with a 9:01.338-minute run. According to Peugeot, that shatters the previous electric vehicle record at the track by an impressive 50 seconds.
The fully-electric Pug, which debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, averaged 85 mph on its record-setting run. Peugeot has promised to release photos and video of the EX1 at the Nordschleife, but for now we'll have to wait.
The lightweight, four-wheel drive EX1 was created to celebrate Peugeot's 200th birthday, and packs a pair of electric motors (one on each axle) totaling 340 horsepower. As for production, don't hold your breath, though the technologies on display in the EX1 and lessons learned during its development will likely influence future models.
