Fernando Alonso thinks Ferrari must improve its qualifying performances in the remaining races of the season if it is going to win another race. The Spaniard once again showed strong long-run pace in the Korean Grand Prix, but his chances of fighting for the podium were dented by a lowly grid slot and a poor opening stint. Speaking after the race, Alonso believed that Ferrari still had work to do to extract more speed out of its car over a single lap on Saturdays.

Formula 1 drivers have been warned that they will be reported to the stewards if they cut the track betweens Turn 4 and 6 of the Yeongam track in Sunday afternoon's Korean Grand Prix. It may not be as hilarious or silly as Rémi Gaillard's real-life Mario Kart experiment, but the idea of dressing up as everyone's favorite Italian plumbers and hitting the streets in go-karts has made its way to Japan. The folks at Japanese website Cliccar donned their best Mario and Luigi costumes, hopped in a pair of go-karts and hit the streets, drawing huge crowds in the process.
The Cliccar folks raced street-legal X-carts, which cost around ¥379,800 (about $4,900 based on current exchange rates), and are capable of speeds up to 35 miles per hour, or even 50 mph when tuned properly.

Report: Clarkson contract blunder leads to cancellation of Top Gear TomTom GPS

Those of you hoping to hear the boisterous voice of Jeremy Clarkson coming out of your TomTom GPS are going to be quite disappointed. As it turns out, part of the BBC's editorial guidelines state that none of the Top Gear presenters can endorse motoring products, and thus, having Clarkson screaming out of your TomTom is a clear violation of this policy.
Some 54,000 units of the Clarkson-ified TomTom have already been produced, with many already in stores. BBC Worldwide has stated that it will now donate all proceeds from the TomToms to the Children In Need charity. The BBC told UK's The Guardian that Jezzeh was in no way involved with setting up this deal and will not make any money from the partnership between BBC and TomTom.
Looks like drivers will now be forced to add in their own insults, sarcasm and humor to the TomTom sat-nav experience.

Rennsport Reunion IV: 1978 Porsche 935 "Moby Dick"

The year was 1978, and Norbert Singer was tasked with building the ultimate Group 5 Porsche 935. His sole objective was to deliver a win at Le Mans. Singer went immediately to work and pushed the FIA's rules to deliver a lower, wider and more aerodynamic 935 than anyone expected. With a white body and a characteristic long swooping tail, it was dubbed "Moby Dick," after Herman Melville's great white whale.
But don't get the impression that Moby Dick was just an aero kit on a 935, as there were other less visible changes to the race car.
The turbocharged flat six was bumped up to displace 3.2 liters and fitted with water-cooled heads. When it was time to race, the four-valve engine developed 750 horsepower. Since the Le Mans circuit runs clockwise, the driver's seat was moved to the right to optimize weight distribution. On the Mulsanne Straight, it could hit a blistering 235 mph.
Moby Dick qualified third at Le Mans in 1978, behind two Group 6 prototypes (Renault Alpine and a Porsche 936). While it was the fastest on the straights, it finished in eighth place after an oil leak became an issue. It ran in two more races that year before Porsche retired it to the museum. Three clones were eventually built, and they raced well into the 1980s.

Official: Toyota returning to Le Mans with hybrid LMP1 car

Toyota has announced that it is returning to the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile's World Endurance Championship in 2012. The car it will be contesting the series with is a new prototype that will use a hybrid gasoline/electric powertrain. We can only hope the experience will equal more exciting future models under the Prius range...
The last time Toyota competed in Le Mans racing was in 1999, just before the Japanese automaker abandoned the GT-One program to focus on Formula One.
We don't expect Toyota's new LMP1 racer to have anything in common with the erstwhile GT-One, which was powered by a 600-horsepower 3.6-liter twin-turbo V8 engine. Though always fast, Toyota's last-gen endurance racer never quite put together a complete race. Here's hoping the effort produces more consistent results this time around. Capirossi optimistic about fitness
Loris Capirossi said he was in better shape than he had feared after Friday practice at Phillip Island, as he returned to action following his recent injury lay-off. A dislocated shoulder sustained in a collision with Toni Elias in the Aragon Grand Prix forced Capirossi to sit out the subsequent Motegi round, and he was concerned that he would still be in pain in Australia this weekend. Though he expects his discomfort to get worse as the event goes on, Capirossi was cautiously pleased with how he had fared today, having been 10th in first practice.

Hamilton: I just need to do a better job
Lewis Hamilton says he simply has to do a better job in order to bounce back from his run of disappointing performances in recent races. Report: Ford boosts V6 F-150 forecast, will hit 100,000 sold
While there was undoubtedly some consternation among pickup truck traditionalists and industry pundits, it appears Americans like their full-size V6 pickups just fine, thank you. According to The Wall Street Journal, Ford Motor Company had expected sales of its 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6-equipped F-150 pickups to represent about 40 percent of its mix, but the turbocharged six-cylinder is on target to be around 45 percent of the mainstay model's sales tally, with sales hitting about 100,000 units in 2011.
Despite the sour economy, WSJ notes that sales of Ford's pickups are up around eight percent this year, though that increase trails that of its crosstown rivals at General Motors and Ram.

Wilks discovers suspension issue
The Kronos-run Peugeot UK team has discovered that a suspension issue was a contributory factor in Guy Wilks' crash while fighting for the Rally of Scotland lead yesterday. We love the 5.0-liter V10 from BMW. Besides having an affinity for any engine with more than eight cylinders, the torque-happy five-liter sounds like straight glory and is happy to induce all sorts of tail-wagging fun from the outgoing M5. That doesn't mean there's not room for improvement, however. The minds at Dinan have taken the time to put the engine through the standard performance ringer by boring and stroking the block to a full 5.8-liters, dropping a set of performance cams into the head, bolting on a dry-sump oil system and wrapping the whole project up with a set of racing exhaust headers.
What did all of that effort net? How does 720 naturally-aspirated horsepower at 8,300 rpm and 497 pound-feet of torque grab you? The engine was specifically designed to be used in the Riley Technologies 2011 MKXXV track day car. We just like seeing it punish the engine stand and light its exhaust purple. Vettel pushed without thinking of title
Sebastian Vettel said he was driving as hard as possible to try and win the Japanese Grand Prix, without thinking too much about the championship. The German driver needed just one point to secure his second crown, but Vettel said after the race that he was "as hungry as ever" and trying to win the race without the championship in mind. Huertas beats Magnussen in finale
Carlos Huertas completed his third season of British Formula 3 by winning the last race of the year at Silverstone this afternoon. The Colombian outdragged poleman Kevin Magnussen at the start and held his nerve as they swept through Copse for the first time. Huertas traded tenths with his Danish Carlin team-mate throughout the rest of the 20-lap race and held Magnussen at bay to win by just half a second.

Report: Unidentified companies 'showing interest' in Saab, but Geely isn't one of 'em

The Saab story continues. Automotive News and Bloomberg report that all isn't well with the Swedish automaker's Chinese suitors. Saab still hasn't received the $93 million it needs to continue to operate while it undergoes restructuring. The cash was originally supposed to come from Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile in as little as two weeks after a deal was inked, but the process is apparently taking longer than anyone originally envisioned. At this point, Saab doesn't know when the funds will arrive. The company hasn't produced a single vehicle in as much as six months.
Meanwhile, Chinese automaker Geely is denying reports indicating that the company is interested in jumping into the Saab fiasco. As you may recall, Geely bought Volvo in 2010. At this point, the Chinese company says that its resources are currently occupied running its own Swedish brand.
In the meantime, Saab still maintains that it has several unspecified companies interested in potential future partnerships.

Report: Ferrari Enzo successor powered by V12 hybrid, next 599 to get 700+ hp

Ferrari has rolled out a few tasty bits of news courtesy of Car and Driver. The Italian sports car manufacturer has made it clear that the successor to the legendary Enzo will come to the party packing a V12 engine mated to a hybrid system. While Ferrari has already hinted that the company is seriously considering electrification with concepts like the 599 HY-KERS, CEO Amedeo Felisa said that a production Ferrari hybrid would have to include some sort of efficiency-boosting system in addition to a performance adder like a kinetic energy recovery system.
Felisa also said that the replacement for the company's 599 will feature somewhere around 700 horsepower. The machine will keep its front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout, but will rely on aluminum alloys for its body structure instead of carbon fiber. Felisa says that the absurd power in the future 599 is not a response to the Lamborghini Aventador, however.
Uh huh.

Official: Mazda RX-8 Spirit R will be last special edition before production ends

Mazda has chosen to commemorate the departure of the company's RX-8 with one last special edition in Japan. The Mazda RX-8 Spirit R is set to arrive at Japanese dealerships next month and will offer 1,000 lucky buyers a host of aesthetic upgrades over the base vehicle. The package starts with an RX-8 RS and adds in exclusive badging, unique head- and taillights with black bezels and red brake calipers outside. Indoors, the cabin wears special Spirit R bucket seats hewn by the people at Recaro as well as piano black transmission tunnel trim.
Models equipped with an automatic transmission will enjoy black leather seats with red contrasting stitching. Mazda says that the RX-8 Spirit R will also feature a sport-tuned suspension and larger brakes, as well as 18-inch gun metallic wheels. A total of three exterior color options will be available, including Aluminum Metallic, Sparkling Black Mica and Crystal White Pearl Mica. Hit the jump for the press release.
